E-Government

E-Government
E-Government is a fairly new concept which has been built over time to make a very convenient and useful service. E-government allows you to view a number of different things online that could save you a lot of time, i.e. NHS direct which is a service which can give you online diagnosis’. The main website for the Government is www.direcrgov.co.uk, it gives you countless amounts of information, and can save you a lot of time on this website. The website allows you to view a number of different topics and sub topics.

Finding statistics through E-Government

Online government allows you to view online statistics; the most common one is most probably viewing the crime rate in your area. The website directs you to another site which will give you the details online, and you can then find out how many crimes have been committed in your area. This is a great innovation because people are more likely to want to know how many crimes are being committed in their area. On the website, www.yougov.co.uk, you can access statistics on peoples personal opinions on things, such as smoking, drink driving and other topics. You’re able to view online statistics which can help you understand more.
Advantages:
-          You’re able to view things going on in your area
-          You can get statistics on issues you may have concern with
-          You can get many facts and figures off the websites to give you the information you need.
Disadvantages:
-          You may get out of date figures and facts
-          It is difficult to find on the directgov website, making it harder.
-          You may not be able to get the data you need
I personally think that putting a lot of statistics online is a good idea because people can view them easier and just do it online, for convenience I think it is a good idea and works well. I like the way that on yougov it is easier to find statistics, directgov just gave you information not really statistics.
Debating online/giving your opinion online
On the governments websites you’re able to give your opinion and view on many different subjects, it is able to give you the chance to put your opinion about your country forward. It is good for people who want to have their say, and debate it with other people. On the website you can find out things, watch debates, contribute- they ever offer you 25p for each survey you do, which shows that they’re trying to entice people. They use this to get people to contribute so they can access what they think easily. You’re able to complete different things.
Advantages:
-          You can give your view on something
-          You can talk to other people with same views as you
-          Earn money for completing surveys
-          Find out more information
Disadvantages:
-          You have to sign up to contribute
-          The surveys are quite time consuming
-          It is difficult to find things
I think that it is a good way to communicate your views with other people, however I found that the website was a little confusing, but putting that aside, I believe that it is a good way to get people throughout the country to contribute their views and for the government to collect views.
Signing Petitions online
Online petitions have grown hugely in recent years, within 3 weeks of the site for e-petitions being open 3.5 million people have visited the site and 1.25 million of those signed a petition. They’re getting huge because they are easier to do online because you can just sign it there, instead of finding the place where you can sign it, i.e. libraries, etc. It makes it easier to fight for what you want, also online you’re able to set up your own petitions which gives people the chance to campaign for what they want. E-petitions are good because it is another way that the government can gain information about the general public and find out what they want. BBC have covered issues to do with the E-petitions: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-14903835

Advantages:
-          You’re given the opportunity to vote for something you want
-          You’re saving paper by doing it online, and you do not have to employ someone to do it manually.
-          It is done by database so it is easier to process.
Disadvantages:
-          People may lose their jobs, due to technology taking over.
-          You have to give personal details about yourself

I personally think it is a good way to do things because it is quicker and easier, and people are more likely to give their time. I signed a few and found that it was an easy simple process.

NHS direct
NHS direct is great, it allows you to check your symptoms online, get advice and other things that predominantly you have only been able to do through a doctor, or someone within that profession. It is good because you can access all this data, for free! The main use of the website is probably the symptom checker, it is great to see if your problem is serious or just something minor. The government control this website, as they are control of the NHS, and they have done a really good job. Not only do they offer a symptom checker, they offer advice lines and other things that are there to help people- it is a great website that allows you to feel at ease because you can find out if something is wrong with you.

Advantages:
-          Quick, easy to use
-          Saves a lot of time
-          Could save you a trip to the hospital
-          You can find out advice, i.e. suicide lines, child abuse, etc.
Disadvantages:
-          It cannot be fully accurate without a real doctor
-          They may misjudge the symptoms
-          Could mislead the user
Benefits and Taxes
Using online websites to tell people if they’re entitled to benefits, or renewing tax is great because they can do it easier online. They can find out information about it, and see if they can get it. This could be a lot easier for people that do not have the time to get it, i.e. young carer or people who are disabled. It is good for those people.
Advantages:
-          Easier to get information
-          You can access it easily online
-          You can find out information
Disadvantages:
-          You cannot access it without computer
-          Time consuming
-          May not tell you if you’re entitled

I personally have no used it, but I am sure it is good for people who do.
