ICT in the news

ICT in the news, contemporary stories.

ICT in the news has become a regular feature, not only does it make news daily online, but recent stories such as BlackBerry being down for a few days captivated the headlines, with people all over the world being infuriated people throughout the world. The stories from ICT can be from many perspectives, and cover a vast range of topics to do with ICT.

ICT in Hospitals(BBC news story)
ICT in hospitals is a recent story, in which people are beginning to campaign for people to use ICT in computer to make it easier and quicker to get work done. The hospital has argued the case that ICT in hospitals would have alerts when to give the patients the medication which would mean a decrease in the amount of people forgetting to give their medication. This has been used by a hospital and they saw a decrease in forgotten medicine given, it decreased by 50%, they now estimate that they could save 16,000 lives a year by using ICT in hospitals. Not only does ICT allow them to be notified to do medicine but it can alert people from throughout the hospital if there is a serious problem with the patient, in the hospital it has been used, it seems to be working very well. Using ICT within hospitals is a good way of improving patient healthcare, to make it faster and easier to use.
"Our ambition is to unleash a revolution of information throughout the NHS, so that everyone benefits from a modern, responsive service,"- Simon Burns, Health Minister.

BlackBerry’s technology fails
Recently the news highly covered the fact that the majority of BlackBerry users were faced with a failure in BBM, internet browsing and the BlackBerry email, essentially everything internet based failed and at the time BlackBerry could not do anything about it for the few days. The services which are only used by BlackBerry such as BlackBerry email and BlackBerry messenger(BBM), were down for around 3 days, this caused a lot of problems and for the 3 days BlackBerry were slow about getting it back working. BlackBerry faced a lot of criticism for the problem, and although they tried to find a solution, it took a lot of time for them to fix the problem. However due to the inconvenience and trying to apologise to the owners, they offered their customers free app’s to try and regain their trust.

A truly inspirational man within the ICT world- Steve Jobs
When Steve Jobs died on the 5th October 2011, ICT lost one of its main figures. Jobs was an innovative and clever man, who not only brought a brand to such a well known name, he also brought amazing ideas and products to the technology world we live in today. He made Apple what it is today, and he will be sadly missed. People throughout the world paid tribute to him, he was inspirational throughout the world. It is said he left a few years of ideas as well, he was forever dedicated to his job.

E-Government

E-Government
E-Government is a fairly new concept which has been built over time to make a very convenient and useful service. E-government allows you to view a number of different things online that could save you a lot of time, i.e. NHS direct which is a service which can give you online diagnosis’. The main website for the Government is www.direcrgov.co.uk, it gives you countless amounts of information, and can save you a lot of time on this website. The website allows you to view a number of different topics and sub topics.

Finding statistics through E-Government

Online government allows you to view online statistics; the most common one is most probably viewing the crime rate in your area. The website directs you to another site which will give you the details online, and you can then find out how many crimes have been committed in your area. This is a great innovation because people are more likely to want to know how many crimes are being committed in their area. On the website, www.yougov.co.uk, you can access statistics on peoples personal opinions on things, such as smoking, drink driving and other topics. You’re able to view online statistics which can help you understand more.
Advantages:
-          You’re able to view things going on in your area
-          You can get statistics on issues you may have concern with
-          You can get many facts and figures off the websites to give you the information you need.
Disadvantages:
-          You may get out of date figures and facts
-          It is difficult to find on the directgov website, making it harder.
-          You may not be able to get the data you need
I personally think that putting a lot of statistics online is a good idea because people can view them easier and just do it online, for convenience I think it is a good idea and works well. I like the way that on yougov it is easier to find statistics, directgov just gave you information not really statistics.
Debating online/giving your opinion online
On the governments websites you’re able to give your opinion and view on many different subjects, it is able to give you the chance to put your opinion about your country forward. It is good for people who want to have their say, and debate it with other people. On the website you can find out things, watch debates, contribute- they ever offer you 25p for each survey you do, which shows that they’re trying to entice people. They use this to get people to contribute so they can access what they think easily. You’re able to complete different things.
Advantages:
-          You can give your view on something
-          You can talk to other people with same views as you
-          Earn money for completing surveys
-          Find out more information
Disadvantages:
-          You have to sign up to contribute
-          The surveys are quite time consuming
-          It is difficult to find things
I think that it is a good way to communicate your views with other people, however I found that the website was a little confusing, but putting that aside, I believe that it is a good way to get people throughout the country to contribute their views and for the government to collect views.
Signing Petitions online
Online petitions have grown hugely in recent years, within 3 weeks of the site for e-petitions being open 3.5 million people have visited the site and 1.25 million of those signed a petition. They’re getting huge because they are easier to do online because you can just sign it there, instead of finding the place where you can sign it, i.e. libraries, etc. It makes it easier to fight for what you want, also online you’re able to set up your own petitions which gives people the chance to campaign for what they want. E-petitions are good because it is another way that the government can gain information about the general public and find out what they want. BBC have covered issues to do with the E-petitions: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-14903835

Advantages:
-          You’re given the opportunity to vote for something you want
-          You’re saving paper by doing it online, and you do not have to employ someone to do it manually.
-          It is done by database so it is easier to process.
Disadvantages:
-          People may lose their jobs, due to technology taking over.
-          You have to give personal details about yourself

I personally think it is a good way to do things because it is quicker and easier, and people are more likely to give their time. I signed a few and found that it was an easy simple process.

NHS direct
NHS direct is great, it allows you to check your symptoms online, get advice and other things that predominantly you have only been able to do through a doctor, or someone within that profession. It is good because you can access all this data, for free! The main use of the website is probably the symptom checker, it is great to see if your problem is serious or just something minor. The government control this website, as they are control of the NHS, and they have done a really good job. Not only do they offer a symptom checker, they offer advice lines and other things that are there to help people- it is a great website that allows you to feel at ease because you can find out if something is wrong with you.

Advantages:
-          Quick, easy to use
-          Saves a lot of time
-          Could save you a trip to the hospital
-          You can find out advice, i.e. suicide lines, child abuse, etc.
Disadvantages:
-          It cannot be fully accurate without a real doctor
-          They may misjudge the symptoms
-          Could mislead the user
Benefits and Taxes
Using online websites to tell people if they’re entitled to benefits, or renewing tax is great because they can do it easier online. They can find out information about it, and see if they can get it. This could be a lot easier for people that do not have the time to get it, i.e. young carer or people who are disabled. It is good for those people.
Advantages:
-          Easier to get information
-          You can access it easily online
-          You can find out information
Disadvantages:
-          You cannot access it without computer
-          Time consuming
-          May not tell you if you’re entitled

I personally have no used it, but I am sure it is good for people who do.

Online education

Online Education
Online education has shaped the way we learn. Whereas twenty years ago, the only way to learn would have been through, sometimes, dull and tedious lectures and writing based lessons, now we are able to learn through a number of ways making work a lot more fun and in most cases easier. Most people are very supportive of online education, as it really an innovation.
VLE’S
VLE’s are great! It stands for “ Virtual learning environment’. They allow you to access the work from your school, work place and any other place where you learn through the internet. You are able to sign on to the site with a special password and username, then you can access all the resources of your school/company through this site. They are extremely helpful and are great to ensure you get your work done. VLE’s do cost a lot to install though, so they’re only good if you use them frequently and well. Many schools have now incorporated them into their learning systems, and it seems to be working well.

Advantages:
-          They’re easy ways to set work and receive it.
-          You’re able to access work wherever you are, if you have an account.
-          You can gain more resources.
-          Saves paper/other resources as it is done online.
Disadvantages
-          They can be quite expensive to install.
-          You have to have a basic understanding of computers to use them.
-          Some people may forget passwords/usernames causing hassle.
-          Some people may find it difficult to learn this way, does not cater for all learning styles.
I personally find the VLE in my school very good as I am able to access work at home if I forget to save it to my memory stick or send it home via email, so it is handy to have the resource there to retract my work from. I think it is great and would advise many people to get it.
Learning and revision sites
The rise in the number of people beginning to use online websites to revise from is substantial in the past few years. Many GCSE/A-Level students find that revising from the internet on sites such as bitesize and Sam Learning was easier that constantly staring at a text book. The internet allows you to make revision and learning more fun by giving you targets or a competition with your friends.
Sam Learning is a big site for revision, you’re giving your login and once you’re logged in you’re able to make an avatar and earn points for revising, you can also compete with people in your school. Sites like these are great because at an ages in which your attention is likely to wander with textbooks, you’re more drawn in with a website which allows you to compete but learn at the same time. BBC bitesize is also a huge site for revision as you can revise, do tests and play games to revise which caters for many people, and you’re less likely to get bored revising this way.

Advantages of revision sites
-          You’re able to revise in a more fun environment than textbooks
-          It is cheaper than going out a buying the textbook as it is free
-          You can use a wider range of resources
Disadvantages of revision sites
-          Some websites may require a joining fee
-          You may get distracted by other things on the website
-          You may not be able to find the topic you need

You can also get online learning sites which are good because you can get online lessons in your subject, and then get set homework. Essentially they are like online teachers, they will take you through the process and teach you it, just as a teacher would. The main site for online learning is probably www.mymaths.com. Many schools now use this because you’re able to use it to teach your students, and they understand it. It offers a wide range of ways to entertain the students too.

Advantages of learning sites
-          They are easy to access if you know the right place to go
-          You are able to access a range of topics
-          You learn in a more entertaining environment
Disadvantages of learning sites
-          Some websites require a joining fee.
-          Some students may learn better from a book
-          You have to have a few logins for security which may be tedious, or you could forget them.
I personally am a big fan of online revision sites and used them a lot throughout my GCSE process and I think it helped me a lot. I found the fact that there was many different ways for me to learn was good and it kept me entertained. However I was not a fan of learning sites like my maths, as sometimes because it was online you had to be too exact which was annoying in some cases.
Access to resources online
The internet is great for education in this way, because you’re able to access information and resources throughout the web. Now, due to the internet, you can type something into Google and most likely get a lot of results for the piece of work you’re doing. With sites like wikipedia you’re more or less likely to find what you need to find, it is really that easy. You can also access statistics etc online because you’re able to just find them straight away, i.e. 96% of under thirties have a social media account. You can find statistics like this throughout the internet, and they’re so easy to find!

Advantages of online resources
-          Quick and easy to find
-          Don’t have to search very far
-          You can access them whenever
Disadvantages of online resources
-          Could be unreliable
-          You don’t know who is posting them
-          It is secondary data so could be out of date, or in different context.

I personally think that online resources are really helpful and often use them when I am doing background research into subjects, or I want to find something out. I find them really quick and easy.
Online multimedia for education
Online multimedia for education is great because you are able to get videos, audios or pictures teaching you how to do something such as cooking, playing a game, etc. They’re great for if you do not have enough time or money to take real lessons in the topic that you wish to learn. With YouTube most likely having over 500 million videos, you’re highly likely to find what you want. In recent years, there has been a higher demand in people using the internet for things such as information videos.

Advantages of online multimedia
-          It is easy to access
-          Easy to find
-          Could be quite helpful

Disadvantages of online multimedia
-          Could be unreliable
-          Might not be clear enough
-          Could be time consuming to find the right one
I personally do not use online educational videos frequently, but I have used them before and they were quite helpful. I have seen people make a living out of giving tutorials online on YouTube, it is good for some people, but not for others.
Self help forums
Self help forums are good because you can find one on anything you need to really. They allow you to talk to other people, and find out things. You can learn a lot from people on these forums and if you need to find out something quick, they’re good. Sometimes the information may not be as educational as you may hope, but generally it is how you would like it. Many people use these, and find them helpful. They’re good for education because not only do they offer you a vast range of information, but they offer you personal inputs on the subject too.
Advantages of self help forums
-          They are able to offer a vast range of information
-          You can find out the information you want
-          You don’t have to give any personal information out
Disadvantages of self help forums
-          You may get inaccurate information
-          Could mistake something for something else
-          Can sometimes get quite abusive
I personally don’t use self help forums, but friends have done and found them reasonably good but prefer other methods of getting information.

Copyright
Copyright is a set of rights that you’re given if you pay for it and create an original piece of work, .i.e. the iPod is copyrighted. Copyright used to just apply to books, however you can copyright almost anything these days, and many people do. The act came into force in 1989, and this meant that people could not copy your work under any circumstances without permission. They would have to ask the owner of it for permission, and if they declined, you would not be able to use the image/logo, etc. You could be sued a lot if you break this law, and it is more common now, you don’t even have to know you’re doing it.
